This bánh mì is named after District 5 of Ho Chi Minh City, home to a large Cantonese community. A classic Sino-Vietnamese dish, xíu mại are pork meatballs simmered in a sweet and spicy sauce.
We add french fries as an unexpected twist to the recipe to provide a crispy and satisfying texture, perfectly complemented by the rich and flavourful meatballs and sauce. The Vietnamese pickles and cilantro provide a fresh crunch to contrast with the meatballs and french fries, meanwhile, the crispy and airy baguette acts as the perfect empty canvas for this culinary mashup.
